Establishing Leadership

Dogs thrive when leadership is clear and consistent. Because it is easy to send confusing messages, we have prepared the following partial list of guidelines.

Do: Don't:
  • Meal feed
  • Handling and gentling exercises
  • Teach basic commands
  • Have pups earn privileges
  • Initiate and end play sessions
  • Employ head halter for training
  • Use lowest level of correction necessary
  • Be consistent and trustworthy
  • Free feed
  • Offer food off plate
  • Allow pup to watch you clean up after him
  • Permit pup to leash pull or jump up
  • Let pup mouth skin or clothing
  • Rough house
  • Reward demands for attention
  • Give up prime resting spots (bed, couch)
  • Use punitive corrections
  • Allow pup to steal possessions (socks, slippers)
