Socialization
Socialization is the repeated exposure to new people, animals,
situations and noises in a non-threatening manner. It is the key
to a happy, confident adult dog. A well-socialized pup develops
confidence and is less likely to be fearful.
The prime socialization period for puppies is during their first
year, with the most critical time being between 4 and 14 weeks.
During this time it is crucial that he has positive exposure to
as many people, places and things as possible. Having said that,
puppies under 4 months of age should be restricted to preschool
and in home socialization. Avoid bringing your unvaccinated pup
to high risk areas such as the beach, park or school.
When exposing your puppy to a new situation or person, reward only
positive behavior. Ignore fearful responses such as cowering, hiding
or trembling. Do not inadvertently reward such responses by soothing
them with touch or voice.
If your puppy responds to a new situation anxiously, identify the
stimulus and expose him to low levels until he reacts calmly.
How you respond to a situation is important. Your puppy takes cues
from your body language and tone of voice. So keep positive!
