Domestic medium hair cats(DMH) are of mixed ancestory, therefore they can come in a variety of shapes, sizes and temperaments. Some cats are quiet and docile while others are more active and vocal. Some are affectionate, while others are independent. Most are playful when they are young. Some enjoy the company of children and other pets.

Due to their longer, and often thicker, coats they do require more grooming and brushing than the closely related domestic shorthair. Weekly brushing helps to prevent matting and hairballs.
